Chapter Twelve

Vampires had the supernatural ability to be wonderful dancers.

“Darling Melessa.” Slade swept her around the human dance floor. “Fear not. I have avenged you.”

“Oh, Slade. Thank you for your heroic rescue.” Her gaze cut over to where To’kel’s body lay. The human waiters had covered the dreadful thing with a tablecloth, lest the ball be ruined by his dead, gaping eyes staring at the dancers. Still, it was a dark cloud against the shining sun of their future. “Shall we never know a moment of peace? Will our enemies always pursue us?”

“It is the price of being valiant and good, My Eternal One. Villains always seek you out.” He regarded her tenderly. “But, we shall prevail. It’s a town full of losers and we’re pullin’ outta here to win.”

“You should put that into a song.” Melessa dreamily sighed as they danced around.

“If I did, the song would be an incredible hit.” Slade assured her. “My mother was a princess from the Enchanted Realm of Melody, after all. Before she was lost forever in the Sea of Silence.” He paused for a long moment, gazing off at nothing. “But perhaps, Mother will come back one day. …Just when we need her most.”

Melessa made a not-really-listening “uh-huh” sound, fluffing out the skirts of her ball gown so the sequins sparkled with extra sparkliness. Christine would be eaten alive by jealousy when she saw Melessa’s picture in the paper the next morning. “We should tour the fair, don’t you think, snickerdoodle?”

“Of course, precious treasure lips. We can ride the Ferris Wheel.”

Melessa pouted slightly. “But that might mess up my hair.”

(Note to readers: The remainder of this chapter is 49,959 words of Slade and Melessa touring the World’s Fair, without messing up Melessa’s hair, and visiting a talking monkey oracle. Then, they agree to go back to the Vampire Isle together. I have mercifully abridged it for you. You’re welcome. –Cassandra.)
